Cart Based Recyclables Generation & Recovery Audit – Hillsborough County, Florida

KCI audited contents of residential trash and recycling carts collected from neighborhoods in Hillsborough County, FL. KCI worked with county staff to obtain 30 composite samples of trash and recyclables. Each composite sample consisted of multiple households within a specific area, and each area was dispersed across all collection zones in the county. KCI collected samples from each of the five county zones, sampling approximately 150 households. Resultant data collected in the field was used to calculate valuable metrics on recycling rates for the county, including:

  • Average per household generation of trash and recyclables.
  • Average composition of trash and recyclables.
  • Average recovery rate of individual recyclable materials.
  • Average capture rate of recyclables between two streams.

Source Based Recyclables Generation & Recovery Audit – Sarasota County, Florida

KCI audited contents of residential trash and recycling bins collected from neighborhoods in Sarasota County, FL. KCI selected roughly 30 composite samples of trash and recyclables, six during each of the five collection days to ensure geographic distribution. Approximately 150 households were sampled. In March of 2020, KCI will complete another study to review the changes from a dual stream bin system to a new single stream automated cart system. Resultant data collected in the field is used to calculate valuable metrics on recycling rates for the County, including:

  • Average per household generation of trash and recyclables.
  • Average composition of trash and recyclables.
  • Average recovery rate of individual recyclable materials.
  • Average capture rate of recyclables between two streams.

Florida Multifamily Recycling Pilot Program

KCI was selected by The Recycling Partnership to develop and manage programs for increasing Multifamily Recycling Participation in Florida.  This project includes partnering with Communities to provide funding for supplies, materials, or infrastructure to increase Multifamily Recycling Participation by a minimum of 20,000 units.  The goal of this program is to provide new tons of recyclables, especially PET plastic bottles, into the recycling stream to continue to grow the market.  This project focused on selected particular communities to develop multifamily pilot or soft opening projects that would then be used as examples for future development of multifamily recycling programs and outreach.
